1. There is no equal!
These are the best hand mixers on the market. Breville is somewhat new to American markets and is not well known here in the USA, but without a doubt the word is getting out about their superiority. Being a professional baker, I need a mixer that can cut through heavy cookie batters and bread doughs, especially when I don't want to use the stand mixer. No other model on the market has 16 speed settings and I have used every one of them. This thing is powerful! These mixers may cost a bit more, but they are worth every penny for quality and convenience.

2. Thought there were problems, but customer service was great.
The LCD display for speed and timing seem stuck on 16 and 01:27 no matter what I did. The booklet said nothing about a display sticker that you must first peel off. D'oh!

The beaters did not self-eject. The booklet seemed to imply that pressing the Eject button would release the beaters and it does but they don't fall out. You must tug.

I had my old beater for 30 years and have had two high-end replacements which I returned for various reasons.

This one I'm keeping.

Breville Hand Mixer
Great product. Love the way you can stand it up on counter. Mixer has 16 speeds which is perfect with a power button. Works well for the whipped cream as one can whip without having the cream spew all over with the constant variable speed. Like being able to wrap the cord around mixer but needs something to clip it to the cord to hold in place. Could be a little quieter but wouldn't want to lose any power to make it so. Am very pleased with it's performance.

Shipped on time. Nothing broken. It even came with 8 glasses instead of 4. I got it for my boyfriend for xmas and he loves it! Really beautiful set. The only downside is that every glass has a small sticker on it that doesn't come off easy.

1. Not a bad buy!
So the first thing that jumps out to me, it just how badly I needed this item once I physically saw what actual portions are. While I do agree with other reviews that the serving spoons do seem fairly cheap, they are serving spoons and not cooking spoons. Another comment that I read was in regards to the cheese grater. Yes, it is small, however, that is the point. It is a serving and that is the amount of cheese you should be using. I believe that concern stated was in regards to making quesadillas. You shouldn't be making huge, cheese stuffed quesadillas. It is ok to make them it's whole wheat tortillas with a small serving of cheese. The point being, if you feel that the set isn't making you enough food - I would argue you need this set desperately.

This shipped the day after I ordered it and arrived in two days. It actually came 3 days before the estimated arrival date.

I am looking forward to using the pasta and salad dressing items. I have enclosed pictures...

Flimsy and handles fell off.
Bought the utensils a while back. Spatula was very flimsy and would bend with a chicken breast especially when warm. Handles fell off serving spoons within two months of purchase. They too would bend when serving warm foods. Great concept though. We don't think we are eating as much as we are. Would consider some of the other tools but concerned about quality for the price they are asking. We just decided to use old fashioned measuring spoons and cups as our utensils for serving foods. They are cheap enough at $6. $2 for spoons and $4 for long handled cups. Purchased two sets, when one is dirty we have the other. So far have lost 10 pounds daughter has lost 9 in aprox. 3 weeks.

1. Great Grinder
Very pleased with this grinder. Have had it now for a few months and essentially had bought it to make cat food. It grinds up chicken thigh bones without a problem and that was one of my main concerns that it be powerful enough to do so. We have also started to use it to "make" our own hamburger which once you start doing that you will never go back to store bought. The rate at which it grinds up food is fast. I found I had to have all my meat ready to feed because it ground just that quickly. The machine itself is sort of heavy, but I generally do not have problems lifting it. It cleans up nicely, I do use my bottle brush for some of the pieces to make sure and get to those hard to reach places. I would certainly recommend this machine to others!

2. Now THIS is a meat grinder!
First off, I love the circuit breaker, which shuts off the power to the grinder if meat gets trapped in the auger. If the KitchenAid stand mixer I had been using to grind meat was equipped similarly...I wouldn't have burned out the motor. Alas, the KA is not well designed and it is now a piece of junk in the basement. When it came time to choosing a new appliance to grind meat, I decided to buy a dedicated machine, not something made to do a million and one different kitchen jobs. There's something to be said about heft, and this LEM grinder has weight to it...which is a good thing. It is powerful and grinds up meat the way I want a meat grinder to work...fuss-free and no-nonsense. In comparison, the KA grinder attachment would whine shrilly and grinding meat was slow and laborious. All in all, I think that this grinder was a worthwhile purchase and it's looking like I'll be quite happy with it. Time to make some kielbasa!

LEM .35 HP Grinder
This works fine so far and seems to be a quality unit. Be sure to read the short instruction sheet as you have to coarse grind first before you can fine grind. If you skip that step you will be sorry. Also you will need to buy a plate larger than 3/8. You cannot drop the meat in one step unless you use a coarse grind plate first which I do now BTW. I suggest that you buy a larger plate as 3/8 will not give you a real coarse grind.

Update: the coarse grind was great and equal to fine grind at the supermarket. Also bigger is better and would buy the .75 or 1 if I had to do it over again. The throat is bigger in the bigger models which means less cutting. Go large folks.

No where does it say made in USA only a made in China on the box.

I own a small catering business and bought these to keep track of things when smoking over night, or hosting a party where I'm away from the smoker for long periods of time. I was able to go down in the basement with the receiver and never lost signal! You can set your "done" temp for the meat, and set a high and low warning for the smoker/grill. The alarm is great because on the night of events where I have to smoke the meat overnight and need sleep the alarm is nice and loud and doesn't stop until it's attended too so I can keep things on course while getting a few hours of sleep. Make sure to read the directions because there are very specific procedures to make sure you set them up correctly and clean the probes correctly! The added meat claws were nice, and I could see them helping someone out to hold the meat while slicing or shredding one pork butt/shoulder, but when you have 5-10 butts to shred they aren't economical, but they are neat.

2. Works Great.
Is an absolute necessity when using my Traeger Smoker. Internal product probe assures that food is cooked fully and safely. The ambient air thermometer for use inside the smoker is far more accurate than the digital thermometer on the smoker. The range for the remote is excellent works well even when I am inside my house.

1. WOW... Its the only word I can utter right now...just WOW.
This is the best choping block I've ever owned. Notice I didn't call this a board, as the brawny thickness of this product with the substantial feet(with rubber bottoms to prevent slipping) brings this up quite a few notches from mere ordinary cutting boards. This is a chopping block to end all chopping blocks. I can only compare this to butcherblock, but made from Green, eco friendly, self renewable bamboo. You're doing the environment a favor by going with bamboo over synthetic boards/mats, and even over traditional wood such as red maple.

I love red maple, don't get me wrong. Aside from the green advantages, bamboo is 16% stronger than Red Maple. Its not going to dull your knives significantly faster, at least nowhere near the extent of the fools who cut on glass or marble as a cutting board. I still can't believe some people preach using infinately harder surfaces like marble to cut on. Sure its a snap to clean up, but you're going to be cutting with a popsicle...

2. This butcher block is a MUST HAVE!
My compliments to Totally Bamboo and Amazon for carrying such a quality product - I highly recommend it. The shipment arrived promptly, and the block was well packed and protected. When I opened the box, I couldn't believe how beautiful - and brawny - this block is. The pictures don't do it justice. It is extremely well made - tightly crafted, very smooth and silky to the touch, substantial, but not too heavy to easily lift and move. The legs are just the right height and the rubber feet hold it nicely in place. It gives a very satisfying "thunk" when chopping - and dicing, slicing and mincing are a joy. Very easy care - wipe with hot, soapy water or vinegar and treat with wood oil as needed. Goodbye, wimpy acrylic and rough wood............hello beautiful bamboo! I give it a big TEN and will be purchasing more Totally Bamboo products.

Great Board
Totally Beautiful cutting board/chopping block!
Some reviews stated that they were experiencing splitting, which was probably the result of not prepping the board properly prior to use.
Heres how....
Apply mineral oil generously with a basting brush. Dont use a rag or sponge, as both will absorb more of the oil than the board when applied.
When I say generously, I mean it. Just squirt the mineral oil directly to the surface of the board and spread out as if "painting" the entire surface, both sides, and even the feet.
I did this everyday for a week, until the board was saturated and could not absorb any more, you will be surprised how many applications this board will absorb, its like a sponge, due to its end grain design, as well as its original dry state.
Your last application, when the board seems to be well conditioned, I would say after 5-6 applications of the above process, in a small bowl or glass, mix about a 1/2 cup of mineral oil with 2-3 Tbs...

1) High stainless steel knives - Fairly sharp, hold their edge well, somewhat difficult to sharpen. These are the knives that you are most likely to purchase at a store. Prices range from very cheap to very expensive (I own a Wusthof set, so I know how expensive they can get).

2) High carbon steel knives - Very sharp, dull easily, easy to sharpen. These are the cheapest, easiest to...

2. Sharp doesn't even begin to describe the edge
Be very, very careful. These are the sharpest knives I have ever dealt with. I have used it for fish, vegetables, boneless meats, and cheeses. You can make cuts as thin as you want, and the consistency of the cut is amazing. This set is a good introduction, and I am so happy with it that I plan on getting some of the other knives over time. The knives cut well and are very easy to clean...what else could you want?

Love the blades hate the handles
I bought this set and the chef's knife. All three cut like a dream. I still am a little too cautious of the ceramic blades. And I don't leave them out due to my fear that someone will carelessly use them on my granite counter tops or use them to pry, twist, or in some other way use and destroy them. When I cook and have friends over they will be conversation items as some of my fiends are equally adept in the kitchen. So why the four star rating. The blades are great, but the light weight, plastic molded handles with an obvious mold seam, look and feel cheap. 1. Just What I Needed
I have started purchasing wheat berries to grind my own flour. I needed a mill that was reasonably priced, but I wanted it to be able to operate in the event of a power outage. I decided on this model because there is an optional part coming out to make this electric powered as well.

The unit is very sturdy and grinds the berries very well. It takes a little work to crank enough flour, but my whole family comes running every time I start using this thing. Everyone wants a turn grinding berries and the kids are so fascinated that is how flour is made. I would estimate about 2 minutes per cup of flour, depending on how fast you can crank it.

I leave this mounted on my counter full time since I use flour everyday, but it is pretty compact and easy to store. After using this unit manually, I really don't know why people opt to grind their own flour, but then buy an electric mill. Using this grinder will have you going a step further than "made from scratch" and...

LOVE THIS - Got fluffy flour while baby was napping.
I have been using a Rocket blender to grind flour. We bought a big bag of wheat berries and I thought it would be easy to grind. HA! It was so loud, I had to wear ear plugs and have my husband take the baby outside.

1. best chinouis out there
It's hard to find a good priced and well working chinouis. the super fine mesh allows nothing to get past, when your looking for a smooth silky sauce, ice cream, or what have you. Seeds from raspberries, or spices won't slip through. The nice grip sits well. Handle is plastic, and there is indeed other strainers out there, but working in the industry (restaurnat world), this is the best I've used!

2. Perfect
This works perfectly for straining my homemade yogurt. With it, I can make a full quart of Greek yogurt, saving me much valuable time. It cleans perfectly in the dishwasher, but the sprayer on my sink works well to clean it, too.

Absolutely Superb
This is one solid piece of kitchen hardware. It took a while before I could get my self to pull the trigger on this; but now that I have it, there are no regrets. It's very solid, and the Exoglass is an impressively rugged material. The mesh on this works like magic. Limited usability for this Mill
I ended up returning this mill because it works with very limited types of salt. I tried Himalayan grinder salt, Celtic Sea Salt and and another grinder salt from Hawaii. The mill ground on and on and after a full minute, I had only about a quarter teaspoon or less. It's a great way to restrict the salt in your diet, but this isn't a good mill for general grinding.

1. Great and infinitely adjustable
I have used many different slicers (V-type, diagonal) and this stainless steel Bron which I also own is my favorite by far. The Borner V slicer I own does not have legs and is thus unstable, it is okay for quick non-uniform shredding and slicing. This model has it's own legs so your two hands can focus on the cutting. If you simply pay attention to where the blades are (put the cell phone down), you shouldn't cut yourself. It has a sliding guard for the food to rest in which attaches to the mandoline (which in the picture of the item is shown attached upside-down) and I believe to be safer than the free floating guards of the others. One plus of the steel construction is absolutely true uniform slices which are produced, which has not been experienced with plastic slicers. If you have the money, it is a great investment that should last you your lifetime.

2. Easy to Use and Easy Storage
Realy happy with the perfomance of this mandoline so far. Had it for about 2 weeks now and it is way better than the last mandoline I owned. Of course it was a bit more expensive than the last one but well worth it to me. I saw one in local store at nearly double the price ($280.00) so $150.00 was a great deal.

The safety gaurd is easy to use and solid stainless construction. The last one I owned had a cheap plastic gaurd and it was not guided on rails like this one. The guided safety gaurd prevents slipping when cutting hard root vegetables and damaging the blade (or myself).

The blades for this one are all self contained on the madonline and rotate and lock into position. The straight blade is very sharp so be sure to raise the upper sliding surface above the blade to avoid cutting yourself when haddling/storing the item.

The Original for a reason, It just simply works!
After much research this was my first choice until actually using the de Buyer dicing mandoline form William and Sonoma. I knew I wanted a quality and versatile mandoline that would last for years to come as well as do the job with consistent results. I've used two other mandolines, the OXO mandoline and de Buyer dicing mandoline, this is the only one that will give consistent slicing thickness at 1mm or less thickness between slices as well as from one end to the other end of the slice (where most failed continually)

It's not made clear on amazon.com but this particular Bron mandoline come with the 10mm and 3mm julienne blades. 2mm blades would be nice sometimes but cutting 3mm x 1mm yields a similar cut that is nice in its own right. You can always purchase the blade set with the 2mm and (8mm / 4.5mm) blades separately. This brings me to a fantastic attribute to this mandoline. I purchased the stainless steel version of the ISI charger when my old black aluminum bottle bit the dust. After only two years of constant use my original bottle failed to take a charge anymore. I went through about $10's worth of CO2 charges before I broke down and bought this new one. The first decision I had to make was whether or not I should buy any new product for ISI. While I have not done the math, it seemed very unlikely that I could have saved enough money making my own soda in the relatively short time I had owned the black bottle, especially when you calculate the cost of all those failed attempts. Honestly though, I cannot be sure that user error did not contribute to the problem. These things take some getting used to. If you do not tighten the charge head onto the bottle with sufficient pressure, the charge will leak. Contrary to experiences of some other users here, I inserted one of my new Leland co2 cartridges into the isi stainless steel siphon, and it worked perfectly. No gas leakage. Before this, I had filled the siphon with water, put in refrigerator for a few hours, then started the co2 release. Afterwards, following suggestions of other reviewers, gave it 20-30 shakes to better dissolve the co2 in the water. Filled a glass with definitely well carbonated water, probably even more charged, than some store bought bottled soda water. No strange after taste noted, either.

Shims not required for Leland cartridge. I think some folks did not sufficiently tighten the charger unit before initiating the final twist, so the seal was not properly made, and gas escaped. I bought this hoping to persuade my husband to make his own fizzy water using the RO water from our filter, rather than the unhealthy sodas he had been drinking.

Not only does he LOVE making his own selzer, but he flavors it with the organic extracts I always have on hand, creating delicious HEALTHY flavors that are not available elsewhere. (We add the extracts to the glass, not the siphon.)

Here's what I wanted in a mill:
1. The ability to grind very fine flour.

Since I couldn't afford 3 separate mills, I settled on the Wonder Junior Deluxe.
Here's how it met my requirements:
1. This mill can grind a very fine flour, but only if you grind it coarsly, then again on a finer setting. The problem with this is the second grind takes a VERY long time. Doing a single grind, I was able to grind 4 cups of hard red winter wheat into bread flour in 20 minutes. I was grinding like I was trying to set a world record though, just to see how fast I could physically grind wheat. I do not grind this fast on a regular basis. 2. Best mill available for the money
If money is no object the country living mill is better and twice as expensive. The other well known mill in this price range is Lehman's "Our Best Grain Mill." I've owned a Lehman's best for 16 years. It's inferior in every way. The hopper is a plastic funnel stuck in a hole and will fall off if you look at it wrong. The Wondermill Junior hopper that holds the grain is an integral part of the body. The Lehman's Best Grain Mill metal burrs are cast iron and subject to rusting. The WM Jr metal burrs are stainless steel, the Deluxe also includes stone burrs. The Lehman's clamp is an inferior one screw design. The WM Jr is secure with a soldid two screw clamp design.

If the deluxe is out of your budget there is also the less expensive basic and the only difference is you do not get the stainless steel burrs (just the stone burrs) and you do not get the clamp, you can screw it to a table. I bought one of these from an Amazon seller in November 2009, after I got to play with one in a store. It has a very smooth grinding motion and feels sturdy.

This was a compromise, but it worked out very well. I definitely wanted a board with a "blood groove" all the way around it, and my wife wanted a board with a totally flat surface. this has both, so you can just turn it on the side you want. That's a big plus, in my house.
I especially like the size of it. Big enough to carve a full size turkey on, yet small enough to fit in most any storage place.
A very high quality cutting board, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

2. Very Disappointing
My husband is quite the cook (and especially likes to grill) and I really wanted to get him a nice cutting board with a deep trench for father's day. We have only had this cutting board since June and it is not used every night. Already there are multiple splits on both ends of the board. I have had my cheap bed bath and beyond cutting boards last longer then this expensive heavy cutting board did. Needless to say I will never buy a John Boos board again. I am very disappointed about the quality because I love how they look and some day when I had a bigger kitchen was planning on buying one of their big butcher blocks. It looks good, it works well, it lives up to kitchenaid's good reputation. Like the other pasta cutters and the roller, it works better if you dust the sheets with flour between rolling and between rolling and cutting. That way everything works smoothly and the strands separate. I don't separate the individual strands of angel hair, but like the manual says, you can make a little nest of it in a baggy and freeze it.

When you cook the pasta, stir it while it is first in the water to break apart the clumps, and you will have something good to eat that you know was prepared with care.

MAKING PASTA IS EASY
This is a great item and really makes pasta making a breeze. Cleaning the product is relatively easy, no immersion in water so you need a little brush or tool, which for the price of the item should be included. The thin(angel hair) pasta is a good size, but the wider noodle is much wider than fettucini. It was very good but not like fettucini. This attachment works with the pasta roller. The adjustments on the roller determine the thickness of your pasta. I would recommend this product and have used it several times.

Ideal wheatgrass juicer
This is my favorite juicer to date. I use it solely for wheatgrass - about 5 oz per day at one time. It is not tiring on the arm and I prefer it to the electric kind that pollutes the juice and the environment with the noice and vibrations.

This is the newest model by Hurricane. Their previous juicer has great reviews, but this model is a step foward and nearly perfect. It is by far the best maunual juicer available.

The clean up takes about 1 minute. Just unscrew the end cap; pull off the handle; pull out the gear; and rinse the cap, gear, and body under the sink. Simple with no mess.

Plus the pulp is very dry - meaning you get nearly 100% of the juice from the grass!

The best part is the price. You can't go wrong. This is the dedicated wheatgrass juicer to have!

This is being used to convert a 7 cu in. chest freezer into a cheese cave. I need the temperature to stay between 50-55F. This unit has a 3.5 differential set by JC to keep your cpmpressor from burning out, and so far, it does just that. It works really well and for the price, its the best thing out there. It's a nice machine, works as advertised, and I find the Diet Cola is very close in taste to Diet Coke. The other flavors are variable in quality and in how closely they replicate the flavor of the market leaders.

However, you will not save money. I've put all the math below. For startup costs I've assumed you'll want at least two additional bottles, and two additional canisters. This is probably conservative, since the whole point is to save trips to the supermarket, and the bottles will definitely wear out over time. I've amortized these startup costs over 3 years, with four family members each drinking 45 gallons per year of soda. The Diet Cola flavor sells for $8.32 here on Amazon as of today, and refills on the canisters cost $15 each.

Put all this together, and it comes to $1.04 per liter. Average retail on Diet Coke is $0.70. So you won't save money.

What you will save is your time, your gas, your back and your fridge space. It's nice to be able...

2. Refills and shipping keep going up. Shipping slooooow
This is a good product sold by a company that has sleazy business practices. Their practices should be known before committing to buy anything from them, because you are locked into dealing with them (and only them) forever.

The company is misrepresenting the exchange situation in an almost criminal manner. They told me that if I bought 2 more spare bottles for 100 dollars, I would have free shipping for life as long as I ordered two exchange bottles at a time.

Not too long after, they reneged on that, and started charging me for shipping.

In addition, their site says, "Exchange locally to avoid shipping charges". That was true for me when I bought it. It did not last long. Fewer and fewer places have exchange bottles, and some have really high prices. Today, a local exchange for my (formerly) standard size 130 liter bottle is not possible in 99% of the US. Only the smaller 60 liter bottle is available in my state, as well as several neighboring...

Best appliance in my kitchen (Penguin version) -- well, not counting my microwave :-)
I initially bought the Penguin version of this soda maker (same maker, and also sold on Amazon), and it has quickly become the most used appliance in my kitchen next to the microwave. It makes flawless carbonated water and does so in a matter of seconds, from cold tap water without the use of any electricity. The carbonated water it produces lasts far longer in my fridge, in terms of bubbles and fizz, than any carbonated water I've gotten from the store, including Pellegrino.

I use my Penguin soda maker with a PUR 2-Stage water filter PUR DS-1800Z 2-Stage Water Dispenser, which sits in my fridge and dispenses cold water that can go right into the soda maker carafe/bottle.

I was skeptical before buying the soda maker as I could not fathom how such a small product could produce carbonated water almost instantly without electricity. But it surpassed all expectations and continues to amaze me...

1. A very good upgrade
I previously had an American Weigh Gemini-20 scale I would use in my research, which is similar to this but slightly less accurate. I recently began pharmacodynamic characterization studies of a few compounds for which the greater accuracy provided by this scale would be beneficial.

Relative to the Gemini 20, the build quality is much higher, and the attention to detail is much finer. The scale body, the cover, even the mating of the battery door to the unit just scream of "somebody actually thought about this". My Gemini 20, while reasonably accurate, always sort of half-felt like it could just randomly disintegrate if you picked it up too fast. There's also a very nicely placed mating set of concentric rings between the load cell and the weighing dishes, making it impossible for the dish to slip and contact the scale body. No dime mod needed here!

2. Better than the Gemini-20
The design lends itself to accurate, easy measurement. Accurate to within about +/- 3mg, which isn't bad for a scale of this price. Comes with two trays, two calibration weights, and a nice storage case. I previously had the Gemini 20, and it was useless. Unless the tray was seated meticulously, the scale would be off drastically. I was a bit apprehensive to get this one after my experience with the Gemini-20, but it's a great scale for the money. I wish it came with a metal tray instead of just a plastic one, but that's not a big issue.

This is the best small scale I've come across for the price. I was skeptical about
accuracy down to .001 gram, but I tested this against other scales and it really is
excellent.

I would have liked to have the tray a bit larger, but I am not complaining.

So after all the questioning and doubt about whether or not our family can justify spending this kind of money for a grinder. One word comes to mind. JUSTIFIED! Our oldest son and daughter (14 and 12) each got their first deer this year. I got 4, one friend got 1, another 2. Let me just say the time we spent together grinding meat and stuffing different sausages made it worth the price almost by itself. I first made 10 lbs. of Italian sausage which turned out good. Then I made 5 lbs. of breakfast sausage. Then last week we made over 70 lbs. of Jagdwurst (hunters sausage). Yesterday we made jerky and snack sticks. The light has been turned on to the possibilities. We just followed the directions, made slight adjustments and we have made great products. This machine worked flawlessly grinding. 2. Far exceeds my expectations
This is a beast of a grinder! It has so much power that it doesn't even finish stretching when I run 20 lbs of pork butt or 15 lbs of beef chuck through it, let alone get a workout. The entire unit is beautiful, strong, and sanitary stainless steel. It feels overbuilt in every way. I can't imagine anything breaking on it.

It is a heavy unit, but not so heavy that it can not be moved. Bear in mind, however that I am a 200 lbs 28 year old guy.

I purchased several extra grinding plates and stainless steel knives and they are all of the highest quality - in line with the quality of the grinder. I also purchased the LEM meat lug with lid and it is also great, just a bit too tall to fit under the grinding plate.

The Big Bite technology is great. It sucks down the meat so fast that there is little to no need to pre-freeze your meat or use the tamper.

I only have one issue with the grinder: It's made in China. That said, I can not imagine...

Can't live without it!
I burned up two other meat grinders before this one. It grinds poultry bones and meat without problem. I go through 200 pounds of meat and bone in 30 minutes without worrying about temperature of the meat. I make my own ground cat and dog food monthly in 150-200 pound batches.

1. Can't live without it
This is a decent affordable electric mill. It has a large capacity reservoir and a dial for variable grinds of flours. You can pour about 2-3 cups of wheat berries in the hopper at a time, and add more as the grains flow through the grinder. I usually make about 6 cups of flour at a time, and the process takes about 5 minutes. I've made oat flour by simply putting rolled oats through the hopper, and corn meal using corn kernels. Corn kernels don't flow as well through the hopper, though. They need to be trickled in a bit more slowly so that they stay below the level of the intake hole at the bottom of the hopper. Flour coming out of the mill feels warm to the touch, but I have no idea if the temperature is high enough to decrease nutrients. In any case, once you get used to having fresh flour whenever you want, you can never go back, because store-bought flour tastes very flat and stale.

2. Good but not my favorite mill
I owned and used this mill daily for many years (12 years, I think) - that is 3 of them. The grinding worked great - I have no qualms with that. But it is not the most convenient, nor the sturdiest I've used. (It was back when I got my first one. Before the newer ones came out, I think this was the best.)

It is noisier than the newer mills, and produces more flour dust in the room (though it isn't bad - I've seen far noisier and "dustier" ones). The small hopper is a bit inconvenient, as is removing the mill head to get to the flour in the flour pan, as is the small hole the grain feeds through (you have to pretty much handfeed corn and larger beans to keep them flowing).

The biggest problem we had was the clips that hold the head to the pan would crack, and on one of our mills the underside of the head developed a pretty big crack. This mills were still usable, but you couldn't get as good of a seal (to keep down that flour dust).

Clip latches on side a MAJOR problem - Recommendations....
We have had this mill for about a year and a half and it has worked wonderfully as far as grinding wheat quickly and consistently.

However, we have had to replace the plastic covering twice due to the clips cracking or breaking completely off. My mother had the same problem with her old one, and so I was extra careful removing or handling the top according to the pamphlet instructions. They cracked anyway; the second time it cracked all the way to the vent. Only on the second fix did the receptionist tell me that if you lift the latch opposite the side where the overflow cup is, and then turn the motor like a hinge, does it minimize that problem (this is not explained in the instruction manual). However, it only took one person to struggle with it for it to break again.

1. Amazing little gadget
I had some zucchini angel hair with pesto at a potluck and was so amazed by it, I have been seeking the right tool for the job ever since. The little Joyce Chen gadget many seem to rave about gets such mixed reviews, I was afraid to try it. When I came upon the Benriner, I was sure I knew which brand I wanted - but was not sure whether I should go with the cook help (upright) model or the horizontal model.

I couldn't really find anything comparing the two. Best I could tell, they were the same, but one you pushed down on, and the other you pushed sideways one. The most compelling reasons to go with the upright model seemed to be cost and it seems like it should be easier to push down, than sideways. The most compelling reason to go with the horizontal model were the pile could grow bigger as you worked and you wouldn't have to move the unit, you could use bigger chunks of vegetables, and it seemed you could do a cabbage. I could not find a picture of cabbage being...

2. Innovative, but over-priced
This is a very innovative gadget. It will turn any firm vegetable (eggplant, e.g.) into spaghetti-like strands that can be deep-fried and plated for a stunning effect. It has several different serrated blades, so the dimension of the strands can be changed. The base and most of the components for this device are light-weight plastic. Although the Kanekichi is cleverly engineered, placing a vegetable in the 'sled' and turning the handle, I found I had to apply some pressure to get it to move through the blades - a little awkward since the device is light enough to slide around on the table top. Also, anything moderatly 'squishy' isn't going to work well. This does seem sturdier than the Joyce Chen model, based on reviews of the latter. However at $75, the Kanekichi is seriously over-priced, unless you're truly desparate for a device that will turn vegetables into attractive ribbons.

If you can't figure this out, I don't know what to tell you.
Just got done with my first try with the BN5. It couldn't have been easier. I don't know how anyone is having trouble keeping the slicer from moving around: Just use both hands. One hand to turn the crank and the other to hold the blade mast and push the crank carriage, with an easy pinch movement. Perhaps if you had very small hands, or were trying to slice an extremely dense and woody vegetable it would be a problem. However, I put a zucchini through with a feather touch, no problems. The noodles turned out better than expected and actually tasted almost like pasta once sauced up right. I cooked for two minutes this time, but may try a bit less to see if I can get the zucchini to stay a little more firm, if that's possible.

Construction of the device is substantial. It's "plastic", which I'm thinking is ABS by the looks of it, and does not feel cheap at all. In any case, it seems like it would be near impossible to break this slicer. Changing or cleaning blades is a snap...

I checked out several brands before deciding on this one. I followed the directions exactly, and the pasta came out perfect. it makes up to 3 pounds of pasta each time.That's a lot of pasta. But, you can freeze the leftover that you don't need right now. the noodles are not sticky and they cook fast. the fettucine cooked in 3 minutes after water boiled. I have no regrets.

2. Lello still has some design work to do
I am not impressed. I recently purchased this machine with high hopes that technology had advanced enough to out perform my old worn out, long retired early 90's vintage "Pasta Express From CTC".
There are those instances when time is short it would be nice to not make pasta by hand using a more traditional pasta roller/cutter. So I decided to give this machine a try thinking Lello may have got it right by watching what designs didn't work with other vendors of similar machines over the years. But after three uses it is in my opinion a marginal improvement.

First the good points...
It's mixes the flour into pasta dough very well. The design of the stirring paddles do a decent job of mixing the flour and water together. Using Semolina and whole wheat blend you can generally get perfect consistency dough in about 10-15 mins.
Single direction operating motor for both mixing and extruding. Gone is the need to flip a direction switch for each operation...

When I opened the box to show my fiancée what it looked like the screws connecting the the lid and the bottom warped or something because the top of the box came completely off in my hand. Used instead of new, what a shame
It was very disappointing to receive an item that was clearly a return from some one else, the envelopes were all stained with black stains, the key was missing the ribbon as seen in the picture, instead it was taped with masking tape to the bottom of the box. The wine glasses are all scratched.. this is a shame of customer service!!

OXO makes great products so I thought the negative reviews must be incorrect BUT they are right on. First I noticed the main slicing blade had 6 or 7 nicks on it after slicing potatoes and yams just four times. OXO does not sell a replacement for this important blade. Next I tried the julienne blades. What a joke. I managed to julienne a turnip but the yellow pepper was beyond its capabilities. In addition, while I was trying to do this, the food holder fell apart in my hand. My husband reassembled it and set it on the counter where it fell apart again just sitting there. While this mandoline looks nice it is cheaply made, especially the important parts - the cutting blades. I returned this product, and I hope I get a refund.

2. Smooth Slicer
I just started using my new Chef's Steel OXO Mandoline Slicer for Thanksgiving preparation. First of all the packaging of this product is not only beautiful but also a useful box to store the slicer in. The pictures and key inside of the food sliced in varieties of ways is easy to follow and gives the cook great ideas. My kids are now eating radishes that were sliced using the crinkle slicer. I think all slicers take some practice to use, but I was able to fit 2 large radishes side by side on the food holder and slice away. The holder moves smoothly over the slicer and you can cut quite quickly. And I wanted to try cutting a potato in a waffle cut and I did it!! After one potato I really had the method down and couldn't wait for some salt and vinegar. I am excited to see what else I can make on my Mandoline. Great for soups and it really makes the food look pretty with a pleasing texture on the tongue. I found the slicers to be very sharp without too much elbow grease needed. Happy...

Company slipped on this one
I am scared to death of mandolins. My fingers go into a ball when I even see one on the shelf. With the Kim Chee and sauerkraut I've been making I needed to break out of my shell and buy one. This on the surface was a wonderful design. I was so excited and felt safe just having it in my kitchen. All sharp blades pull in and out of the base so what is left is the base and some free standing blades. So much easier. Wish the product was as good as the design. The blade is non sharping so it won't last and the carrots I put through the julianne slicer wouldn't pass through. Too dull? I got half the carrot through the machine and then the fingers of the guard just sliced grooves through the carrot leaving me without the ability to make the pass unless I used my hand. Not why I bought this machine. I'm on the hunt for a SHARP one that makes me feel safe. I returned it.
